Closing the Gap

How do we close the gap in Indigenous Health? What does true reconciliation look like? I believe God is raising up Christian doctors who will be passionate about seeing healing and wholeness flourish in our Aboriginal communities as we walk side by side with our indigenous brothers and sisters in true friendship and restored relationship. Join Dr Maleika Selwyn and Brooke Prentis, Aboriginal Christian leader, as we have this important conversation.

Euthanasia and End of Life Care
Ethical Problems in End of Life Care

Over the course of two hours, we will consider the ethical, legal, biblical and practical approaches to euthanasia (Workshop 1) and end of life care (Workshop 2), from the perspectives of palliative care (Dr Megan Best) and geriatric medicine (Dr Lauren Chong). Both sessions will be interactive, with opportunities to discuss real-life cases.

Caring well for people experiencing Gender Dysphoria

Our society is undergoing a dramatic shift in thinking. With 9 Australian tertiary hospitals facilitating and promoting transitions, there is great pressure on doctors to promote this pathway. How can you, as a Christian doctor, care well with integrity, compassion and love? What is most helpful for patients? This workshop will promote clarity so we can provide distressed young people with the best of care. We’ll cover biblical references, suggest ways of managing patients rushing to transition and address our own fears. Bring questions to ask.

Overseas Mission

Can you imagine moving to a different neighbourhood to share about Jesus to a people who speak and act and think differently to you? Where would you begin? What should you do in order to prepare to make such a move? What training, skills and attitudes might make the transition a little easier and increase the fruitfulness of your work? In this workshop we will explore together what the faith journey from a student, or recent grad to being on a mission field overseas may involve. If God is already moving your heart for the nations and you have some learning experiences or questions to share we'd love to hear from you! Lets learn together about mission!

Choosing a Specialty

The only question anyone seems to bother asking: "What do you want to specialise in?". Getting on and through specialty training seems to be THE final hurdle. Come hear some practical tips on different specialty pathways. More importantly, come hear stories of how others have sought God's advice on this question. Could it be that the 'which' is less important than the 'why' and 'how'?

Diving/Surviving/Thriving in Internship - The Transition from Student to Intern

Ever wonder what happens on ‘the other side’, when you trade ‘medical student’ for ‘junior doctor’? How does being moved by thankfulness for the grace, truth and relevance of Jesus, affect your work? We’ll talk about moving from student to junior doctor: the challenges, the opportunities. We’re happy to cover whatever is important to you, whether it’s finances, being salt and light in the workplace, ministry- and share ideas on how to survive, and thrive, as a Christian junior doctor.

Paintbrushes & Stethoscopes

Some people have an urge to create, they need to express themselves in paint or poetry, drama, dance, or music etc. Medical study/work is a time sponge sapping the energy of many creative spirits who end up in this field. It can be so bad that people dream of quitting med all together - I did! - but is this the only answer? Can you keep creative spirit alive and do medicine? Is it worth it? What does it mean? Bring your thoughts and feelings along to share, as we explore this together.

Compassion and Other Optional Extras. Seriously?
Medicine as Ministry: Rescuing zombie Christians in Healthcare

Doctors who are compassionate have better outcomes for their patients. And so, along with other so-called “non-technical skills”, it is increasingly being taught as a core part of practice. What is a Christian view on this? Can Christians be part of this trend in the healthcare system? If they are not, then whose view of Compassion is being taught? Tash will ground this discussion in Biblical understanding and educational theory, the session will be highly interactive and hopefully thought provoking

"I’m not sure whether to continue with medicine/dentistry, or to go into full time ministry.” This session will explore the tension that many of us feel between our work and faith. A perspective will be presented where work IS our ministry, and the consequences of believing this (or not) will be discussed. This is a critical topic for those who feel a strong desire to follow Jesus with all they have, and wonder if that means quitting their current work or study. The zombie reference will become clear at the workshop!
